Smart Lifestyle Heat Pump Hot Water Review

Tim's Smart Lifestyle Overview

I don't have a strong opinion on Smart Lifestyle units. There's not enough data to assess their reliability. The maintenance requirements are onerous and will increase the running costs of the unit over time.

Cost: Smart Lifestyle units are affordable

Reliability: We don't have any data to assess the reliability of Smart Lifestyle units

Refrigerant: It looks like the latest range use propane, which has a low global warming potential

Maintenance: The maintenance requirements are overly onerous (more below)

Smart Lifestyle Australia offers a range of products including heat pump hot water units, battery storage, air conditioners, EV chargers and commercial refrigerated display cabinets. Smart is based in NSW and Victoria.

As best I can tell from the Owners Manual, Smart Lifestyle Australia offers three sized units: 190L, 250L and 300L. At the time of writing this review, the website isn't clear (it mentions a 200L and 300L only, the product codes don't match up), so I'm will go off the Owners Manual.

Smart displays a number of reviews on its website, but I couldn't find any reviews on independent websites.

It's hard to find information about how much Smart units cost. From what I can tell, they are at the budget end of the market.

Smart's warranty is average - 7 years on the cylinder, 5 years on the compressor and 2 years workmanship.

The recommended maintenance requirements are onerous. The Owners Manual suggests checking the sacrificial anode, cleaning the inner tank and cleaning the e-heater every six months. It then suggests operating the PTR valve every 12 months. Almost every other unit on the market has this the other way around - operating the PTR valve every six months (by the owners) and checking the anode and cleaning the unit less frequently. This, and the way the manual is written, doesn't inspire confidence. The manual also stipulates that all maintenance must be carried out by a qualified tradesperson. If an owner needs to call out a plumber every six months, this will significantly increase the running costs of the unit.
