Chromagen Midea Heat Pump Hot Water Review

Tim's Chromagen Midea Review

I recommend avoiding Chromagen Midea heat pump hot water units as they don't appear reliable and they use an environmentally unfriendly refrigerant.

Cost: Midea heat pumps are priced at the mid-market

Reliability: Reviews of Midea's units are concerning

Refrigerant: Midea units use R-134a which has a very high global warming potential (GWP) and is being phased out of the market (no longer eligible for rebates in Victoria)

Maintenance: The all-in-one mainteance requirements are standard (the split system requirements are confusing and should be clearer)

I’ll recommend avoiding Midea heat pump hot water units.

The key reasons behind my recommendation are:

  1. Chromagen Midea 170L Unit (which I’ll use as a proxy for the other units) receives 3.2 from 126 reviews on Product Review. To make matters worse, nearly all the more recent reviews are negative.
  2. The units use a refrigerant (R-134a) which has an astronomically high global warming potential (GWP) of 1,430
  3. The units are expensive for what they offer. There are cheaper units that appear to offer better reliability.

Maintenance of the all-in-one unit is easier to understand and in line with other units. The Maintenance section in the Owner’s Manual of the split unit is confusing and not helpful.

The warranty of the units is complicated and not very good for consumers. I prefer it when manufacturers keep it simple and easy for consumers to understand.
