Haier Monoblock Heat Pump Hot Water Review

Tim's Monoblock Review

Haier's Monoblock is a fairly new heat pump hot water unit from one of the world's largest appliance manufacturers. There are positives and negatives about the unit. The unit has only been on the market for less than 12 months, so it's hard to know whether the units will be reliable. The maintenance requirements are onerous. A big positive is the unit comes with a strong warranty.

Cost: Monoblocks are priced at the middle of the market

Reliability: It's too early to tell whether Monolbocks are reliable

Refrigerant: Monoblocks use propane which is one of the best refrigerants on the market

Maintenance: Haier requires maintenance to be carried out by a licensed tradesperson. Some maintenance is required every 6 months, which is going to be a big hassle and drive up the cost over the long run

Haier’s Monoblock is a new entrant into the Australian heat pump hot water market, having launched in October 2023.

Haier is a Chinese conglomerate founded in 1984. Haier claims that for the last 15 years it has been the world’s number one major appliance brand based on volume sales. Haier acquired Fisher & Paykel in 2012 and Monoblock is backed by Fisher & Paykel and Haier Australia for after sales, warranty & support.

The Monoblock comes in two sizes - 195L and 246L. I like that they keep this simple - 2 sizes, easy to understand and choose from (some manufacturers go overboard with seemingly hundreds of different options).

The Monoblock uses Propane as the refrigerant, with a low global warming potential.

Early reviews look promising with 4.9 on Product Review, but with the oldest review only being 5 months old, it's hard to draw any conclusions.

The Monoblock comes with a solid warranty: 7 year tank warranty and 5 years for parts and labour. This is well above average and compares well for similarly priced units.

Haier places onerous maintenance requirements on owners. The Owners Manual requires the PTR valve to be operated every six months. Whereas many other units allow owners to complete this simple task, Haier requires it to be completed by a licensed tradesperson. This will drive up long term running costs.

  • The reheat rate is a little long compared to other units. Typically units reheat at 1 litre per minute, so a 250L unit should reheat a little quicker than 300 mins. This probably doesn’t matter. I encourage people to set timers for longer than 5 hours, so it’s unlikely to be an issue. If it is, you can always extend the timer.
  • Maintenance suggestions are thorough and well explained.
