Neopower Heat Pump Hot Water Review

Tim's Neopower Review

Neopower units are an interesting proposition, but there’s a big difference between the split unit and the all-in-one unit. The all-in-one unit has a lot going for it. The split unit however uses a refrigerant with high global warming potential and the maintenance requirements are over the top, which will drive up the cost over the long run. The key unknown with both is reliability - there are few reviews, the warranty is poor and it’s hard to assess whether these units will stand the test of time.

Cost: Neopower units are affordable

Reliability: We don't have enough data to assess the reliability of Neopower units

Refrigerant: The all-in-one units use propane (GWP of 3), but the split units use R-32 with a GWP of 675, which is too high for me

Maintenance: Maintenance requirements are standard for the all-in-one unit but over the top for the split unit

Neopower offers both split units (160L and 260L) and all-in-one units (210L and 260L). The tank volumes will serve most households, but I wouldn't recommend them for houses with 5 or more people.

Neopower is based in Melbourne and distributes a range of hot water products like instant gas units, solar hot water systems and traditional electric hot water units.

While the company has been around since 2010, Neopower heat pump hot water units only launched in October 2023. There aren't many reviews on Neopower or its products. In these cases I look to the warranty as a measure of the company's confidence in their units. Unfortunately the warranty is underwhelming. 6 years for the tank is slightly better than the standard 5 years, but 1 year for labour is poor. This means if there is an issue in year 2 which requires a plumber to visit onsite, you are responsible for paying for the plumber's time, which can add up quickly and will likely cost more than the failed part.

Warranty for both the split and all-in-one units

Special mention must be given to Neopower's Black Diamond heat pump. Heat pump hot water units are generally pretty uninspiring to look at, but this unit looks swish!

Neopower wins the award for worst looking Owners Manual on the market (for the All-in-one unit). Having read every Owners Manual on the market, I feel I am well placed to judge. It looks like it was written by 12 year old me when I was using Microsoft Word '97. Hopefully they take more care in the engineering of their unit.
